The Voice Behind WaldorForward

I am Simone Shurney – educator, scholar, and activist of Detroit, MI. My experience with Waldorf Education is extensive and multidimensional. I am an alumna of the Detroit Waldorf School of Detroit, Michigan (DWS Class of 2003).  In 2012, I earned my Waldorf Elementary Education teaching certificate from the Waldorf Institute of Southeastern Michigan and served as a class teacher at DWS for 11 years. Beginning with a combined sixth and seventh-grade class in my first year of teaching, I graduated two consecutive eighth grades in 2016 and 2017 and celebrated the commencement of the 8-year-long grade school journey of my most recent graduating class in 2025.  I currently work at the same school as an Educational Support Specialist.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Michigan and a M.S.Ed in Educational Policy from the University of Pennsylvania.

In addition to my work with students in the classroom, I have fulfilled a wide range of administrative roles over the years including: a member of the DWS College of Teachers and Board of Trustees, Accessible Tuition Committee Member, faculty chair, and Pedagogical and Community Life Committee chairs. I am very grateful for the many opportunities I have been granted to realize my passion for human relationships, social justice, and community and organizational culture through my work with my immediate community at DWS, and also with the Waldorf community more broadly through my positions as a core faculty member and Professional Development Program Developer for the teacher training program at Great Lakes Waldorf Institute, a member of the AWSNA Leadership Development Team, and contributor and editorial advisory board member for School Renewal magazine.

I am currently transitioning into the Program Fidelity Manager Position at a local non-profit organization that celebrates and empowers the youth of Detroit through dynamic programming that includes health, leadership, and social justice education and community service work.
